EMBO is looking for a creative writer and communicator to help promote and share the work EMBO does.

Your role

You will work closely with the writers and designers in the Communications team, other EMBO colleagues as well as the scientists making up the EMBO community. You will create written content to be used across a variety of channels including the EMBO website, printed materials, and social media.

Day-to-day activities will include:
  • Writing, editing, and proofreading content
  • Planning and scheduling posts for social media
  • Corresponding with scientists and press officers
  • Researching topics, interviewing scientists
  • Uploading content to the EMBO website
  • Providing input into illustrations and photographs
  • Assisting in organizational tasks

You have

  • A university education at Master’s level or equivalent
  • excellent English writing and communication skills
  • the ability to extract key messages from materials and articulate them in engaging ways
  • experience in using social media
  • flexibility in working in a team and keeping track of multiple deadlines
  • an interest in the life sciences is essential
You should have some experience in writing materials that are not scientific papers. Please provide with your application two samples of your writing or communications activities (for example: blog posts, newspaper or magazine articles, newsletters, interviews you led; please do not send articles published in a scientific journal).

Why join EMBO

This is a training position intended to provide the experience needed to find a job in communications. It is suitable for a master’s-level graduate looking to build a diverse portfolio of work in an international environment. You will gain experience in communications planning, writing and editing, and you will have the opportunity to take a look behind the scenes of science funding and publishing.

What else you need to know

This is a six-month position with the possibility to extend to a maximum of twelve months on mutual agreement. The position is based at the EMBO offices, which are located on the international EMBL life science research campus in Heidelberg, Germany. The position comes with a stipend, and accommodation is provided.
